The Y2K digicam look
The flashy, slightly blown-out point-and-shoot photos of the 2000s are back. Here's how to get the look on iPhone — free, on your device, with a date stamp.
Quick answer
Use Aybuke's free Digicam '04 effect: open Edit › Effects, pick your photo, tap Digicam '04, turn on the date stamp and tap Auto. It runs on your device, uses no credits and adds no watermark. For an AI-made 2000s flash portrait, try the Y2K Digicam look instead.
What makes a photo look “digicam”?
- Direct flash: bright faces, dark backgrounds and that unmistakable party-photo shine.
- Cool, punchy colour: early digital sensors made whites a little blue and colours a little loud.
- Soft detail: small sensors and compression gave everything a gentle blur.
- The date stamp: the orange numbers in the corner that say “this was a moment”.

Shooting tips for a real 2000s feel
- Use the flash at night or indoors — that's the whole look.
- Get candid: mid-laugh, mid-dance, mid-bite. Posed photos feel too modern.
- Mirror selfies with the flash on are peak 2004.
- Keep the 4:3 shape. It's the iPhone camera's standard photo shape and the shape of old digital cameras, so skip the tall crop.
- Shoot it live with Retro Cam: Digicam '04 runs right in the camera, with the flash and a self-timer.
- Try Retro Booth in Retro Cam: 4 shots with a 3-2-1 countdown, printed as a strip or a grid with the date.
