80s, 90s & Y2K, free

Aybuke's retro effects give your photos and videos the look of the cameras that made the 80s, 90s, 2000s and 2010s — VHS, disposables, digicams, toy cameras and camcorders — with an optional date stamp, just like the real thing.

Updated 14 October 2026

Aybuke's retro effects are free, on-device filters inspired by old cameras. They never use credits, never leave your device and never add a watermark.

How to add a retro effect

  1. Open Effects

In Aybuke, go to Edit › Effects and pick a photo (or a video in the video editor).

  2. Pick an era

Swipe through the effects strip and tap one, like Digicam '04 or VHS '86.

  3. Add the finishing touch

Turn on the effect's option: a date stamp, a border, a letterbox or the camcorder display.

  4. Fix the light

Tap Auto for the best light and colour, or adjust the sliders yourself.

  5. Save or share

Save to Photos or share it — free, with no watermark.

Retro Cam and Retro Booth

The effects live in the camera too. Retro Cam lets you shoot with one of ten effects on, live, with a self-timer and flash. Retro Booth takes 4 shots with a 3-2-1 countdown and prints them as a strip or a 2×2 grid with a caption and the date — made for besties.

Siri, Shortcuts and Control Center

Use the free tools without opening the app: the Apply a Retro Effect shortcut edits an image on your device, even inside an automation, and Siri, Spotlight and the Action button can open Retro Cam, Retro Booth or a new collage. On iOS 18 and later, Control Center controls open Retro Cam and Retro Booth.

Why on-device matters

Effects, video edits, background removal and adjustments run entirely on your iPhone, iPad or Mac. They need no consent, no account and no credits, and the photos never leave your device. Learn more on our safety page.

FAQ

Retro, answered

Are the retro effects really free?

Yes. All 12 retro effects and Tiny World are free, use no credits and add no watermark, on the free plan and on Pro.

Yes. Effects offer an optional date stamp, border, letterbox or camcorder display, depending on the effect.

Do the effects work on videos?

Yes. In the video editor you can add ten of the retro effects or Tiny World to clips up to 5 minutes long; Camcorder '06 even shows a running timecode. Instant '82 and Kira Kira are for photos.

Can I shoot with the effects live?

Yes. Retro Cam puts ten of the effects in the camera, with a self-timer and flash, and Retro Booth takes 4 shots with a 3-2-1 countdown.

What is Tiny World?

A tilt-shift effect that blurs the top and bottom of a photo so the scene looks like a miniature model.
